They had a whale of a time

When my friend forwarded me a mail, I did not believe my eyes. Rather I choose not to believe it and considered it a hoax. The mail had some gory pictures of whales being slaughtered by men. When I say gory, they were horrific, believe me. I could substantiate it with posting the pictures in the blog, but I dont want to(another choice! ) This was a mail seeking condemnation against killing of whales in Denmark. But the accusation on a single country was too compelling with strong words used in the mail. So I had my favourite companion to dig on it, google.

I was in for a shock. So will you be. If the pictures I saw in the forward were gruesome, it was a rhyme book compared to the big novel in store. The killing of the ‘Pilot whale’ is a tradition in the Faroe Island. This island is a autonomous province of Denmark. Every year the slaughter of the Pilot whales is an annual event and about 950 of them are killed. The biggest sigh of relief for the whales is that due to ‘regulation’ the Faeroe’s use a Blunt gaff instead of an usual gaff when pulling the whale to the shore. (A gaff is a pole like device used for lifting the fish by stabbing it)

There have been many regulations on the ‘weapons’ used to kills these innocent animals on grounds of ‘cruelty’ towards them. But what about the actual cruelty on them committed by killing. Should that not be addressed rather than show kindness in the means of commuting the murder.

And a trivia : The sea turns ‘RED’ the day the whaling event takes place. It is truly the outcome of a battle which caused a ‘SEA OF BLOOD’.

But when a cow and pig can be killed for its meat, why not the Pilot whale? The Pilot whale at least lives a good life before it is killed for its meat. While the cow or pig is confined in facilities and fed solely for the sake of its meat. This is not my argument. This what the Faroese people say.
What do you say?

Being a vegetarian, my opinion is very biased. So I would like to hear what you think on it.Comment with your name or anonymously as you wish. And you are welcome to respond to comments posted by others in my blog also.

I'm of the opinion that animals can be slaughtered for food, but not for fun... Hunting as a game is primitive and should be banned even if its related to a national festival.

@ Vimal..thanks for stopping by.
But the Faeroese people kill the Pilot whale to feast on them..So should we accept their arguement

Ya true, you don't need to kill 950 whales to feast... especially, when you haven't contributed in any manner to its birth, growth or livelihood like chicken, goat, buffalo, etc. I don't find any problem in killing 100s of chicken for feasting, but... killing of animals that live in the tranquility of sea or forest does hurt me. Being a non-veggie its a bit too complicated to comment on this... I like non-veg food, but I dislike slaughter...

Yeah, whaling has been very popular in countries such as Norway, Greenland and Japan...... among the many others!

Its quite a horrific sight to seem them 'harpooned' and slaughtered! But then, human beings and ther food pangs can bring anything to the plate it seems!

I remember a statement from the Asian Conservation & Awareness Program (ACAP) which reads "When the killing stops, the buying will too."

Good post!

@ chriz
I appreciate your honesty on fishes..
But do you still feel like eating them(whales) after you see the way they have been slaughtered?

Hey first time im spending time @ ur place..

I could relate with you... I was horrified reading the first few lines, but at the end i asked myself Y not? If we can feast on all others y not whales then? If death pain is similar in a little bird it has to be same in a whale too... Compassion to whales alone becomes hypocrisy...And as someone said killing for food is very human as is the compassion :)

Oh! Gross! where are the animal activists at this time when its most needed? Its so sad that these animals loose their lives for a 'Feast' to the humans...

Im a vegetarian - but I dont think this is a biased opinion...

I can't take it...so I am not even looking into the link....I've had these discussions multiple number of times with my friends who are Non-Vegetarians....I've personally seen hens being slaughtered....and the final squeak they make just takes your life away.....I m probably biased cos I am a vegetarian.

Blog hopped here. I have seen that email and it is way too gory. I had somehow told myself that it is a hoax and deleted it. Now I know there are so many sick people out there who kill such lovely creatures for sport.

@ priti

I used to get into arguments with my freidns who eat meat and try to convince them on what a cruelty they are commiting..That was quiet some time back. Guess I have come to accept that its only fair that people make their own choices..on food too
