The Tangy Taste of Mango

I had been to the Indian Store in Nashville and on seeing those green fat beings sitting on the vegetable aisle, I grabbed one quickly and placed it in my shopping cart[The green fat beings i refer to are Mango]Already i was thinking of the numerous possibilities. Should i cut them into narrow strips and sprinkle salt and chilli powder over them and reminiscence the breeze through my hair on marina beach. Or should i cut them into tiny cubes and add spurted mustard seeds, chilli and hing powder and salt to make the timeless "quick mango pickle" . Better yet i remembered my favourite online cooking instructor " VAH CHEF" and his video of mango rice and the outcome was totally YUMMY to look at.

Back home the mango retired to the refrigerator for a couple of days and i took it out to make Mango Rice. Both my Roommate "D" and I were excited about eating something to do with Mango for dinner. It took us about half hour finish it and we tasted it found it to be too tangy and need of chilli. So D had the honour of adding more fried red chillies to it and I , of adding salt. All was well. And we had a great dinner. Promptly, I logged into you tube and commented on the Video about how wonderful his recipe was and also the important tweaks required to reach optimum taste.

They say happiness is best experienced when it is shared, So I decided to take some for my colleagues at Office. So just before Lunch hour, i opened my box of delicious Mango rice and passed it around to two of my team mates revealing them that it was mango rice made as per my fav chef's directions. But alas, they didn't think it had anything to do with Mango. How dare they mock my cooking!! My argument was their Taste buds were dead. So next we went to my assistant manager to make him guess what rice it and to my dismay he didn't guess it either. SO on it went from person to person and i got answers like, lemon rice, tamarind rice, coconut rice (WHATTTTTTTTT !!!) and "different rice" [yes i did hear that comment too]. But once I revealed thee truth , I was consoled with twinkling eyes that it did taste like Mango rice.. [Boo hoooo :( all Liars!!!]

So my conclusion: Indian's in USA have forgotten the taste of Mango Rice. Really...You got to try out his recipe to know that I speak the truth..

You can check out his site here. Link to the Mango recipe is here , you get to see my comment also in the you tube page.

Burst into laughter when I read 'different rice'. I would take that as compliment instead of hearing one of regular item such as lemon or tamarind or coconut rice, it made someone to think out of box and made them say different....

Maybe you are right.... 'Indians in USA have forgotten the taste of Mango Rice'. Try suggesting Mango Rice to be added to their menu in an Indian Restaurant, when you go next time.

My sis is coming to India next week to give her taste buds a new lease of life :)

I would have guessed mango rice even in my sleep. Send me some sample when you cook something "different" next :)

ha ha that was some experience...vah chef is my favorite too....you actually reminded me of the "Mango experience" i had last week....We got this raw mango (atleast it looked like one from outside) from Giant and my friend makes awesome mango Dhal....so it was gonna be a weekend special and I did not have breakfast on that day so that I could have the appetite for a good lunch...But when we cut it...It was totally ripe and unfit for the Dhal...I still keep dreaming about the dhal..should look to see if have raw mangoes here in the Indian store...:)

Hey Archana,
You should have mixed some Maazaa in the rice. Then there would have been no doubt as to what you cooked ;) Anyways, nice blog.
